Selling Vs. Recommending, a conversation on coaching by Mike Thompson

August 7 at 10:18am
Have you presented the Beachbody opportunity and heard someone say “Is there selling involved?” (in a squeamish tone)

What about this answer – “I’m not a salesy type person! I couldn’t do that!”

What about this answer – “I’m not a salesy type person! I couldn’t do that!”

Well, here’s how you answer this objection –

You: “Have you ever recommended a movie to a friend and then they went and saw it?”

Them: “yes”

You: “What about a restaurant?”

Them: “yes”

You: “What about a drink and then they bought it?”

Them: “Sometimes”

You: “What about a doctor or store or any product AT a store?”

Them: “Well, yeah.”

You: “Did you get a commission check for doing that?”

Them: “No”

You: “Well that’s sad because that’s all I do with Beachbody products – recommend what I love and what works, but then I actually DO get a commission check.”

When you recommend something that has worked for you – it’s not selling – it’s recommending. You can even Highly recommend something because you know it works.

When I ask people to purchase something that I have not tried myself and I can’t personally give a testimony on – THEN I’m selling.

But let’s say you come on as a coach and you haven’t tried much. What do you do then? Well – you talk to other coaches, and ask if they’ve tried it and use their testimony. I do this all the time. I’m honest and say – I haven’t tried that yet but hope to some day but Susy tried it and got great results – She Highly recommends it!

Turning 0 into 2

Yesterday I had a great experience with a friend. A few weeks ago he came to me and said he was loving P90X and in the last phase. I mentioned Shakeology and P90X+ and that peaked his interest and I gave him a sample of Shakeology – both green and chocolate.

He said his wife Lacy loved the chocolate and he liked the green. I told him to get on board with it then. Here’s what transpired (all through texting BTW):

Him: “Wow – I looked at the site and it’s sooooo expensive.”

Me: “Really? $4 per day for a very nutritious and healthy meal. Not bad really. Look, I’ll make you a friend deal. If you’ll order Shakeology on Autoship in the month of August, I’ll give you a P90X One on One DVD of your choice. However, if you place 1 order of Shakeology and your wife places a separate order of Shakeology on Autoship, I’ll give you the whole P90X+ workout program.”

………5 minute pause……….

Him: “Wow, thanks man, I really appreciate it! Okay, we’ll place two orders – just tell me how to do that.”

Now, here’s the math on that –

P90X One on One DVD cost me $15

I would net profit $15 on 1 Shakeology order.

P90X+ costs me $45.

I make $60 on 2 orders, net profiting $15 – same as before. I still make money.

But chances are he and his wife will both get hooked and continue for months…….AND I just got 2 points in Success Club instead of 0 had I not pressed him on the expense and thrown in a deal I knew he wanted. And he was thanking me when done.

Happy Coaching!!
